Description
Rudrabhishek is a Hindu religious ritual performed to worship Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. It involves pouring water, milk, yogurt, ghee (clarified butter), honey, and other substances over the Shiva Linga, a representation of Lord Shiva.
The term “Rudrabhishek” is derived from two words:
- “Rudra” refers to Lord Shiva in his fierce form, representing destruction and transformation.
- “Abhishek” means anointing or bathing the deity as an act of devotion and reverence.
During Rudrabhishek, each substance poured over the Shiva Linga is accompanied by the chanting of Vedic mantras, especially the Rudra Sukta from the Rigveda, which extols the qualities and aspects of Lord Shiva. The ritual is believed to invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva for spiritual growth, peace, prosperity, and removal of obstacles.
